Bay Leaves – An Aromatic and Flavorful Herb
Laurus nobilis is an aromatic evergreen tree or large shrub with smooth, glabrous green leaves, belonging to the Lauraceae family. The plant is the source of several popular herbs and one spice, often used in Mediterranean cuisine. The aromatic leaves are often added whole to Italian pasta sauces and removed before serving, except when used as a garnish. Whole bay leaves are primarily used as a flavoring agent in cooking. Ground bay leaves, however, can be safely consumed and are often used in soups and broths.
