Sesame is a flowering plant from Sesame genus, also known as benne. It is one of the oiliest seeds, with a rich, nutty flavor, making it a common ingredient in cuisines around the world. However, like other nuts, it can cause allergic reactions in some people. Sesame seeds are often added to breads such as bagels and hamburger bun toppings. They can also be baked into crackers, often in sticks. In Sicily and France, the seeds are eaten on bread (ficelle sésame, sesame thread), and in Greece they are used in baked goods. Black sesame seeds are particularly known for their high antioxidant content and provide high levels of calcium, manganese, and copper.
