Anise is sweet and highly aromatic, with a distinctive flavor. The seeds, both whole and ground, are used to make teas and tisanes (either alone or in combination with other aromatic herbs). Anise is a common ingredient in a variety of regional and ethnic sweets, including black jelly beans, British anise balls, Italian pizzelle, German Pfeffernüsse, Austrian Anisbögen, Dutch muisjes, and New Mexican bizcochitos, among others.

Anise also plays an important role in drinks such as the Mexican atole de anís and champurrado (a drink similar to hot chocolate). It is often consumed as a digestive aid after meals in Pakistan and India. In ancient Rome, spiced cakes flavored with anise seeds, called mustachoes, were served after meals, a tradition that eventually led to the custom of serving cakes at weddings.
